What is a Porters Chair?
Porter’s Chairs were first seen in medieval France and then England. They were placed by the front doors of homes for the servant in charge of greeting guests and visitors. This was required because the door knocker would not always be heard throughout the house.
Porter Chairs were designed to wrap around the occupant to prevent the effects of draughts and chills (very common around front doors at the time) whilst they sat for long periods. Even servants needed to be kept warm!
They are also referred to as Hood Chairs. Many original chairs from the period included notches at the side to hang a lantern. The high back, hood and armrests allowed the gatekeeper to sink back into the chair in comfort and warmth
